While the creators of Encanto chose the name Bruno for stylistic purposes, Luca's writers picked the name at random. For Encanto, the movie's creators had a specific reason to select the name, Bruno.

In Luca, Bruno becomes a stand-in character for the internal voice that tells you you can't do something, personifying Luca's doubts. This internal fear propels the story of Luca forward, with Alberto confidently telling Luca: “Don't listen to stupid Bruno.” and “Silenzio, Bruno!” during their adventures.

Bruno isn't just the voice of fear, but the fear of living. Bruno represents the fear of the imaginary unknown future you create in your head. When you're afraid of what bad things might happen to you, you start to control everything in your world, play it safe, and do what others expect of you.
Bruno was originally younger, around the same age as Mirabel, and depicted as "kind of a chubbier, funnier uncle who she met earlier in the movie", according to co-director Byron Howard. His original name was Oscar, but the creative team explored other options due to the number of real-life Oscar Madrigals in Colombia.
